Alexander Bertrand, Professor
Alexander BertrandProfessor

Alexander Bertrand is Professor at the Electrical Engineering Department (ESAT) of KU Leuven, Belgium. He received the Ph.D. degree in Engineering Sciences (Electrical Engineering) from KU Leuven, in 2011. His research involves signal processing algorithm design with a focus on biomedical sensor arrays, such as electroencephalography (EEG), neural implants, ultrasound probes, and body-sensor networks. Applications include brain-computer interfaces, auditory and visual attention decoding, cognitive control of hearing prostheses, and distributed neuro-sensor networks. He also conducts research in generic signal processing techniques, with a focus on multi-channel and distributed signal processing, spatial filtering, and signal enhancement.

Maarten De Vos, Professor
Maarten De VosProfessor

Maarten De Vos has a joint appointment as Professor in the Departments of Engineering and Medicine at KU Leuven after being Associate Professor at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, and Junior Professor at the University of Oldenburg, Germany. He obtained a PhD in Electrical Engineering from KU Leuven, Belgium (2009). His academic work focuses on AI for health, innovative biomedical monitoring and signal analysis for daily life applications, in particular the derivation of personalised biosignatures of patient health from data acquired via wearable sensors and the incorporation of smart analytics into unobtrusive systems.

    Decoding natural stimuli from EEG

I am a postdoctoral researcher working in the lab of Prof. Alexander Bertrand at STADIUS, Department of Electrical Engineering, KU Leuven and Prof. Tom Francart at ExpORL, Department of Neurosciences, KU Leuven. I visited the lab of Prof. Preben Kidmose at Aarhus University in February-April 2023 and June 2024, and the lab of Prof. Giovanni Di Liberto at Trinity College Dublin in February-May 2026. In 2022, I obtained my PhD degree in Electrical Engineering summa cum laude with congratulations from the board of examiners around the topic of signal processing algorithms for EEG-based auditory attention decoding. Since then, I’m working around signal processing algorithm design for attention decoding in natural brain-computer interfaces. Lastly, as a SciComm enthusiast and passionate teacher, I love to deliver workshops and presentations, and to teach. In 2025, I received the Research Council Award from KU Leuven, encouraging young, promising researchers who have demonstrated high quality in their work.
